The Melbourne Metro North Station and the corresponding Over Site Development (OSD) is located on a strategically significant site in Melbourne. The site has a key frontage to Melbourne’s iconic Swanston Street, an avenue on which many of the city’s important institutions are located. It is a place embedded in the cultural and urban memory of Melbourne, a site of reverent commemorative acts, peaceful protest and playful ceremonies.

RMIT University, with its expressive and thought-provoking architecture, has evolved from an internalized institution to one that permeates the fabric of the city over the past 15 years. It is now a
famous learning precinct that bookends Melbourne’s central axis. This project’s architectural response proposes a building that, with its engaging and varied silhouette, responds to this important threshold location. It is intended to read as if the building had been sliced open, revealing its educational activities back to the city, thereby both celebrating and divulging in one of our cities most important and distinct urban precincts.

The building’s fenestration design on it’s East façade will sit comfortably within RMIT’s family of evocative buildings. This façade technique emerges from the Metro North Station, making the building is an unmistakable a symbol of the precinct and a world class transport system.
